Kraket is the study association for Econometrics and Operations Research at the vrije universiteit amsterdam (VU). Kraket was founded on July 14th, 1972, and the name Kraket stands for ‘Kritische Aktuarissen en Econometristen,’ which means ‘Critical Actuaries and Econometricians.’ The vast majority of the econometrics students at the VU are association members, and that is not without reason. You can come by our room (HG-8A30) every workday between 10 and half past 4 to buy books, ask questions, work, or just hang out.
Kraket unites students and business life through case days, in-house days, and the annual ‘Landelijke Econometristendag’ (National Econometricians day), abbreviated as LED. Members can get in touch with companies at these events and orientemselves to the labor market.
Furthermore, once every two years, Kraket organizes a study trip abroad. In 2015 a group of students traveled to Madrid, where they visited various companies, a university, and the Dutch embassy, and of course, they also explored the city itself. Previous study trips had destinations such as Istanbul, Tokyo, New York, Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Brazil. The next study trip will take place in 2017.
The printing press also runs full steam at Kraket. The magazine SECTOR is published twice a year. This formal magazine contains a lot of information about companies. In each edition are business interviews, columns, and different articles by companies, lecturers, and other guest writers. In addition, every quarter, an edition of the Ecotribune is published. In this informal magazine, you can find extensive reports of organized activities.
Indeed, Kraket also organizes relaxing activities. Examples are the ‘Sinterklaas’ celebration, the annual go-karting, and several drinks and parties. Besides that, Kraket is also quite sporty, with regular activities like football, pooling, ice skating, and squash. At the end of the year, the board organizes a weekend trip to an unknown destination. During this weekend, the ‘Kraketweekend,’ you get to know people from different academic years in a sporty and relaxing way.
